Independent Living Skills

The goal of the Independent Living Program is to help consumers maintain or regain the ability to perform personal and home management tasks independently.  Staff
may employ rehabilitation teaching procedures commonly used for the blind, but will also use some deaf-blind specific techniques.  An example is the use of a liquid level indicator.  This small device, placed over the rim of a cup, vibrates when liquid reaches the desired level.

Independent Living skills assessed include:

·        Identification of time and money by touch

·        Banking and money management

·        Adaptive safe cooking techniques

·        Healthy eating and meal planning

·        Home and kitchen organization

·        Wardrobe identification and laundry care

·        Grooming and hygiene
