About Us

INTRODUCTION
Individuals who are deaf-blind have varying degrees of combined hearing and vision impairments.  Basic categories include:

1.    Persons born deaf who become visually impaired or blind starting in childhood or adulthood.

2.    Persons born blind who lose part or all of their hearing starting in childhood or adulthood.

3.    Individuals with normal hearing and vision who lose both sensory capacities starting in childhood or adulthood.

4.    Individuals born with a dual sensory loss.


Some of the more common causes of deaf-blindness are:

Ÿ        Usher Syndrome and other genetic conditions

Ÿ        Congenital Rubella Syndrome

Ÿ        Illnesses such as meningitis

Ÿ        Injury due to auto accident, war, etc.

Ÿ        Aging process

Ÿ        Congenital blindness with acquired hearing loss resulting from disease, kidney failure, prescription or illicit drugs, or exposure to loud sounds over time

Ÿ         Congenital deafness with acquired vision loss resulting from macular degeneration, cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma or tumors

MISSION STATEMENT
To provide the services needed to minimize the devastating effects of combined vision and hearing loss upon the individual and family.


GOAL
To help each person with a dual sensory loss to develop skills, achieve goals, and regain the highest level of activity possible.
